Each October the Peruvian people honor Our Lord Jesus under the title of "El Señor de los Milagros, The Lord of Miracles." A destructive earthquake hit Lima in 1655. Buildings throughout the city were destroyed, but an adobe wall with a mural of Christ Crucified remained standing. Seen as a miraculous occurrence and a sign of hope amid despair, the image has been venerated with great devotion by the Peruvian people ever since.
